It is moments like these that make travelling such a great experience!

BANGKOK WAS our last stop on our round-the-world trip and we decided to splurge a little and stay in an up-market hotel, the Royal River Hotel on the banks of the Chao Phraya river. And the hotel was lovely. But we hadn't taken in to account the effects of the Monsoon season on the river.
When we arrived in an airport shuttle bus we needed to ford the floodwaters just to get inside the hotel. Going to a restaurant down the road was an experience we'll all remember, walking along hastily constructed wooden walkways above floodwaters and along rows of sandbags to get to the hotel shuttle "truck" that ploughed through the deeper water to the sandbag barrier at the restaurant. Once there we had to walk the planks stretched between flooded tables to reach the steps to the upper level.
It may not have been what we had in mind when we thought of a luxury hotel, but the attention of the many staff in surmounting the difficulties of the flood certainly gave us a "highlight" stay.
