Korp kun karp...

BETWEEN US we had a smattering of a number of languages and it was probably in Thailand that we had the least ability to speak to the locals - our Thai was non-existent, the typical Thai doesn't speak English or Japanese or any of our European languages, and the alphabet is distinctly different from our Roman one.

But we had heard how, though not expected, the Thais did appreciate it when tourists tried to speak some of their language, and so we at least learnt how to say thank you. And our nine-year-old son, Justin, was somewhat surprised how effective it was.

When he said "Korp kun karp" to the doorman at our hotel, he was whisked off his feet, and thrown up in the air three times. He was thrilled. I carefully avoided saying the same words to the doorman - but they were well-received elsewhere!
