"I knew we shouldn've come..."

WE WERE IN the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria on Vancouver Island. The second floor of the museum was about the evolution of animals in Canada - with full-scale reproductions of mammoths and other animals in very plausible settings giving vivid pictures of life here in different ages past. Cathy was in her element.

But at the end was a simulated underwater voyage. A combination film, sort-of lift ride and other effects. You were meant to get the feeling that you were joining an expert marine biologist in a bathysphere to view underwater life at different levels.

At part of the ride the cable "broke" and we all plunged to the bottom of the ocean. Our life support systems were limited, time was running out - but in the meantime we were given a good look at the plants and animals at the bottom of the ocean. And most of us were enjoying the look - but not Cathy. She came with us, looking through each window, and then said: "I knew we shouldn've come..."

In the end, just in time, our viewing room started rising (and the aquarium windows started falling) and we were rescued!
