What's wrong with living in a cave anyway?

I mean why bother with all this civilization stuff, this living in each other's pockets in some urban disaster wishing we could get away from it all, back to the natural wilderness that we only see on TV, and then only on the public networks...

Why has humanity changed? Is living twentieth century western lifestyle so much superior than neolithic? I guess the numbers say so. The sharp growth in the numbers of us. That's what evolution looks to, doesn't it? Some indication of better survival routines.

But then on this basis some western countries are definitely on their way out, with populations now stable or falling, compared with strong growth of only a century ago. Personally I have no doubt which population trend I prefer. I'm not sure that being a little speck in a teeming mass appeals much. I tend to walk on ants rather than look up to them. And if we do survive there may even be a cave for each of us one day.
