Our SCRIVEN ancestors were living in the Melcombe Regis and Weymouth area of Dorset in the early 18th century. Many of the men were sailors, although several were also surgeons and clergymen.
Timothy SCRIVEN married Catherine BATTER in 1746 in Wyke Regis. Before Catherine died (in 1748) they had children Samuel, Rachel and Catherine. Timothy remarried - this time to Martha COUSENS, and had a son, Timothy.
Samuel started quite a dynasty. He married Sarah HUTCHING in 1778 and had children Timothy (later Captain Timothy SCRIVEN), Sarah Hutchings, Samuel and John. When Sarah (the mother) died, Samuel married Elizabeth SWAIN (in 1793). They had children Thomas Swain, Martha, Elizabeth, Samuel, George and Emma. Both Martha and George married and went to the USA where they started dynasties of their own. Other descendants of the family emigrated to Australia.
