London Great Synagogue 1870

Joseph MYERS was born around 1794 (some records say as late as 1803) in Amsterdam, in Holland. By 1830 he was working as a bootmaker in Aldgate, in the East End of London. His wife's name was Julia (nee DAVIS), his sister (who lived with them) was named Hannah. Also living with them for a while was Joseph's nephew, Myer Myers. They lived in Petticoat Lane, and later in Duke Street, London. Joseph died in London in 1871, at which time he was named as Joseph Yuppy MYERS.

Joseph and Julia had children Ann, Rosetta, Amelia, Rachael, Nathan, Samuel, Rachael, Rebecca, Simon, Solomon and Abraham.

Their son Samuel MYERS was born around 1832 in Aldgate, London. Samuel also was working as a bootmaker in the Spitalfields area of London when he married Leah LYONS (daughter of Joseph and Mary) in the Great Synagogue of London in 1858. Samuel later described himself as a "boot rivetter" living in Mile End, New Town, London.

Samuel and Leah had children Joseph (also a boot rivetter), Sarah (a dress maker, who later married Charles SHUTER, and emigrated to Melbourne, Australia), Maria (a fur mantle liner), Julia (also a dress maker), Nathaniel, Esther and Abraham.
