Daniel McKENZIE (or McKINZIE) was born in Scotland, between 1766 and 1776. He might have been born in Stevenston, Ayrshire, or possibly on nearby Arran.

Daniel was a shoemaker who married Ann BARBOUR in 1800 in Stevenston, and from that time until the present some of his descendants have lived in the adjoining villages of Stevenston, Saltcoats and Ardrossan, although others have emigrated to Canada and to Australia.

Their son Samuel was a handloom-weaver of muslin. He married Margaret McBRIDE and had children Ann (1838), Alexander (1839), Samuel (1848) and Margaret (1857). Ann married John McNEILL and emigrated to Australia, Margaret died as an infant, while Alexander and Samuel stayed in Stevenston.

In addition to Samuel (born 1811), Daniel and Ann also had children John (1806), Alexander (1808), Grizel (1809), Daniel (1810), Margaret (1810) and Ann (1813).
