Etherington family 1950s


Samuel ETHERINGTON (or sometimes HETHERINGTON) was born in Southwark in London in 1822 to parents Joseph and Hetty (nee HOLMES). (Joseph was born in or near Arundel in Sussex, the son of John and Jane. Joseph & Hetty were married in Brighton.) In 1837 Samuel migrated to Australia, on the "Alfred", under the name of Samuel HOLMES. At that time he listed his occupation as "baker and joiner". With Hester HOLMES he worked as a baker and had six children with the surname HOLMES.

In 1850 he visited his family in London, and after that returned to Sydney where he met Sarah EVERITT (or EVERETT) in Sydney around 1855. This time using the surname ETHERINGTON, Samuel worked as a carpenter and builder. With Sarah EVERITT he had eight children with the surname ETHERINGTON.

About 1883 Samuel left Sarah and after living some years at Mt Victoria (in the Blue Mountains) went to live in Bombala with his oldest son, Henry HOLMES, where he died in 1903.

Samuel had the following children with Hester HOLMES (all with the surname HOLMES):
    Henry Samuel HOLMES (born around 1840) who married first Eliza Jane BYRNE, then after her death to her sister Laura Kate BYRNE. He died in 1912 in Bombala.
    Henrietta HOLMES born around 1847 and died in 1860.
    Ann HOLMES who was dead before 1879.
    Thomas HOLMES born around 1852 and died in 1873.
    Frederick HOLMES born about January 1853 and died in October 1853.
    Emma HOLMES born about January 1853 and died later that year.

Samuel had the following children with Sarah EVERITT (all with the surname ETHERINGTON):

  Samuel Joseph (born around 1857 in Newtown) who married Henrietta MERRICK in 1876 and died in 1927.
  Emmeline Emily (born 1859 at Miller's Point) who married Ernest BURMAN in 1883 and died in 1937.
  John Henry (born 1861 in Sydney) who married Wilhelmina McGREGOR in 1909 and died in 1919.
  Harriet Martha (born 1863) who married William GRACE in 1886 and died in 1936.
  William Edward (born 1867 at Strawberry Hill) who married Annie McNEILL in 1891 and died in 1947.
  Alfred Henry (born 1868 in Sydney) who died in 1870.
  Arthur Melnott (born 1876) who married Annie CRUMMIE in 1898 and died in 1923.
  Frederick Charles (born 1878 in Sydney) who married Ettie GOWAN in 1894 and died in 1925.
